i dunno if any of you remember symbol chat on the JP version... yea thats gonna be a stiff M

ESRB wouldn't rating something that's nonexistent at the time I dont think but I also dont work for them to really know.

@MEGAF1UX , plenty of games with unrealistic looking blood that get an M rating also.... thats how the ESRB rolls. And as you see on the M rating... it clearly states "Simulated Gambling" and NOT "Gambling". You've pretty much admitted to ignoring logical facts with sources that doesn't fit your narrative that "AC Scratch = Gambling = M"...

@RazTheWarlock , that falls under "Online Interaction Not Rated by the ESRB"... which is to mean the ESRB wouldn't care what you can do with the symbol arts since that's dependent on what other people make. Voice chat can be as easily abused and there's been Rocket League with it its E rating and Sea of Thieves with its T rating. Nintendo's Splatoon 2 also has a mode which lets you draw things out and share it with other users... this being something that could and has easily been abused, the game's rating? E10... Hope that clears things up.

Yeah, @Leonkh99 is 100% correct and this game is M rated because of Blood and Violence. Gambling in a game does not mean a M rated. PSU had a Casino and was still a T game. Whatever happens online has no bearing on the content that is present in the game and that is how the ESRB rate their games.

That wasn't it though. We literally went over this. PSU didn't come out in the time of loot boxes or have new laws about banning or restricting the use of loot boxes in a lot of countries now. This game has scratch cards with is their version of loot boxes in which you use real money for.

The Casino literally has nothing to do with it and everything to do with the ESRB description of "containing gambling" which wasn't added UNTIL the battlefront 2 fiasco.

I'm not following on what you mean.

@GamerKillance , if what you say is true then PSO2 would have had straight-up "gambling" which the ESRB defines as "Player can gamble, including betting or wagering real cash or currency" instead of "Simulated Gambling" which is defined as "Player can gamble without betting or wagering real cash or currency" which again... refers to the Casino and is something that even T rated games have had.

The ESRB confirmed that all loot-boxes will be addressed as an "In-Game Purchases" label and which... does not impact the game's rating. https://www.esrb.org/blog/what-parents-need-to-know-about-loot-boxes-and-other-in-game-purchases/ https://www.polygon.com/2018/2/28/17062424/loot-boxes-esrb-rating-warning-labels-crates

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fuelled is E10+ rating with "Loot Boxes" also: https://www.esrb.org/ratings/36226/Crash™+Team+Racing+Nitro-Fueled/

So neither those nor "Online Interaction" (Sea of Thieves, Rocket League and Overwatch) have had their rating changed to M simply for having any form of "Online Interaction".

What does change between T and M is the blood... a game thats rated T either has "Animated Blood" or "Mild Blood". Rated M games have full on "Blood" in their rating description.

Regarding lootboxes changing ratings, that statement only applies to PEGI as Europe is taking stronger actions on allowing lootboxes to be available to children but as far as the ESRB goes (ya know, since the game's NOT releasing in Europe yet and what the ESRB is and has been doing actually matters) , they aren't doing too much bout it and older guidelines are still applicable...

So conclusion / TLDR; ESRB doesn't change game ratings simply for having lootboxes nor do they mark lootboxes as gambling (forget what you think, research their actual statements on the matter please...).

It makes sense, considering the recent inclusion of simulated gambling to the ESRB which requires a minimum rating of M, now.

It's surprising, as PSU AotI also had gambling, but was rated T.

Keep in mind that Suggestive Themes also apply it as either Mild provocative references or materials - or sexual suggestiveness of visual, verbal, written or behavioral material or action with sexual undertones implying sexual intent in order to provoke sexual arousal.

@AnamanaAU , using PSU as an argument, unfortunately, may not get things across well as many people's defense on that will be "PSU came out before the whole lootbox situation".

Thing is though, unlike PEGI the ESRB doesn't punch up ratings for lootboxes (instead merely saying the game "Contains In-Game Purchases") and just plain-old Casinos still fall under a "T rating" as many other games have demonstrated.

The primary factor for PSO2's M rating is not about that or how its community might use certain features (Symbol Arts) but rather regarding the 'base game' content... Costumes, Story, Cutscenes. In Japan, PSO2's CERO rating is being increased due to content present in Episode 5 and 6 which necessitated increasing the rating (things do get bloody in Episode 5).

That's something I hadn't even thought of. Definitely interesting to think about in regards to ratings.. Especially the symbol arts, PSO1 didn't have nearly as much freedom there and it's completely online.

psu didnt have real gambling, it had SIMULATED GAMBLING. it was also way before all the loot box laws.

and what does PSO2's ESRB rating say? img_rating.jpg "Simulated Gambling" which even T rated games have and does NOT include lootboxes since as the ESRB THEMSELVES stated... Unlike PEGI (European Game Ratings), the ESRB doesn't consider lootboxes gambling and any game with Lootboxes will simply list "In-Game Purchases" which...you can see PSO2 has with its rating there. It also has NO bearing on the game's rating.

All this info comes from OFFICIAL statements from them and their own website... i'm not making these up...

Still doesn't change the fact on how the NA region views loot boxes.

Once we get the official rating from the ESRB, this thread will be laid to rest.

it has a giant "M" on the main page... https://pso2.com/

"violence, blood, suggestive themes, simulated gambling, in-game purchases"

@MEGAF1UX I think he/she was referring to the listing on the ESRB website which goes into detail on the reason the game was given the rating. Here is an example: https://www.esrb.org/ratings/35295/Sea+of+Thieves/
