I'm playing the Xbox One version and there's no option to scroll over the trash can. Discarded an item because it was affecting my main character. Is it possible to retrieve that item?

Nope!

If you accidentally sell something, you can buy it back (immediately, before changing blocks), but if you discard an item, it's gone forever.
